“Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers’ Favorite
Seer of Souls (The Spirit Shield Saga, Book One) by Susan Faw opens with Mordecai the wizard saving the souls of two infants from the poison that killed their mother, Princess Gwendolyn. They are born again and live as twins, Cayden and Avery Tiernan, in a little village called Sanctuary by the Sea. Both possess magical talents which they keep hidden from the public, as magic in any form has been outlawed by the ruthless Queen Alcina, who sends regular patrols to scour the kingdom for signs of its use. Alcina also constantly recruits soldiers as the war between the Kingdom of Cathair and the Primordial is escalating.
Faw’s Seer of Souls has the classic theme of prophesied individuals who will be the key to preventing the destruction of their world. Fantasy fans will like the intricate world building as well as the plot. No fantasy world is complete without ethereal beings. The Primordials are elf-like people with magical abilities. There are also spirit guardians, demons, and others. Faw’s prose is easy to read and not laden with heavy terms, which some fantasy novels tend to favor. All the characters are well-developed and the Primordial seeker, Ziona Aspenwood, is my favorite. That said, Avery Tiernan’s role is slightly secondary to her twin in Book One, as the plot mostly centers on Cayden and his journey in discovering more about his power and his past. All the same, I have no doubt that Avery will shine more in the next book and I look forward to it.”
